Malacca Day Trip from Kuala Lumpur
Malacca UNESCO World Heritage Site
Malacca (also spelled Melaka) is a state in Malaysia, located on the southwestern coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It has a rich historical and cultural significance, being one of the most important ports in Southeast Asia during the 15th and 16th centuries. Malacca was founded in the early 15th century by Parameswara, a Sumatran prince who fled the Majapahit Empire. It quickly grew into a bustling port city due to its strategic location along the Strait of Malacca, a crucial maritime trade route connecting the Indian Ocean to the Pacific.
- Portuguese and Dutch Colonization: The city was conquered by the Portuguese in 1511 under the command of Afonso de Albuquerque. It was later taken over by the Dutch in 1641, who controlled it for over a century until the British took charge in the late 18th century.
- British Rule: Under British rule, Malacca was part of the Straits Settlements along with Penang and Singapore. The British influence can still be seen in the architecture and institutions.
Malacca will make you fall in love all over again with its unique blend of ancient buildings and modern living alongside breathtaking sights! Malacca is a famous tourist destination with a rich cultural heritage, subsequent to the colonial rule of Portuguese, Dutch and British and more. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2008.
